SICILY. Syracuse. Deinomenid Tyranny, 485-466 BC. Tetradrachm (Silver, 24 mm, 17.28 g, 5 h), circa 480-475. Charioteer driving quadriga walking to right, holding goad in his right hand and reins in his left; above, Nike flying right to crown the horses with a wreath. Rev. ΣVRΑΚΟΣΙ-Ο-Ν Diademed head of Arethousa to right, her hair drawn up at the back, wearing ribbon and pearl necklace; around, four dolphins swimming right. Boehringer 119 (V54/R76). HGC 2, 1306. SNG ANS 31 (same dies). Lightly toned. Struck from a worn obverse die, otherwise, very fine.
